Frequently Asked Questions

This section is designed to answer some of your questions about acupuncture, our service and treatments. If you have a question that is not answered here please feel free to contact us.

What to expect in a treatment session?

On your initial consultation information will be gathered about all aspects of your health. From there we will discuss the course of treatment and decide what approach to take. Sessions may include the use of acupuncture, moxibustion, gua sha, cupping, massage, diet therapy and lifestyle advice. Herbs may also be prescribed.

Does it hurt?

We use very fine needles and use a gentle style of Japanese acupuncture. This generally means less needles and shallower needling while still achieving great results.

How long is a session?

Treatment will take around 45-60 minutes.

How often will I need to come?

Frequency of treatments can vary. Often you might need to come more regularly initially, perhaps 1-2 times per week or fortnight. After this period visits can become less regular until the condition is under control.

How long will it take to fix my problem?

Duration of treatment does vary in each case and will depend on your unique symptom pattern and how well you respond to and comply with recommendations. Usually pregnancy related conditions respond very quickly. In cases of fertility, treatment may take anywhere between a few months up to a year. Acute muscular conditions generally respond very quickly and 1-3 sessions may be all it takes to completely alleviate symptoms.

How much will it cost?

Cost is $95 per follow up session. $5 discount for cash payments. Initial consultation fees may be slightly higher for fertility cases as these often need more time. Additional cost for herbs and supplements.

How can I pay?

Payment can be made by either cash or EFTPOS in Freshwater. Dee Why clinic is CASH ONLY.

Can I claim on my health fund?

Yes. HICAPS is available in Freshwater. We are registered with all health funds. If you are covered for acupuncture with your fund you will be able to claim. The amount you get back varies and will depend on your coverage with your fund.

What sort of things can be treated?

The wide range of tools and skills we have allow successful treatment of a wide variety of ailments for very minor problems to very serious and long-standing conditions. The World Health Organisation lists a range of conditions that acupuncture can help. Some of these include low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, tennis elbow, knee pain, periarthritis of the shoulder, sprains, headache, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, inductions of labour, correction of position of foetus (posterior or breech presentation), morning sickness, nausea and vomiting, postoperative pain, leucopenia, adverse reactions to radiation or chemotherapy, allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, depression, primary dysmenorrhea, peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis.

What sort of needles are used?

Only single-use, sterile needles are used. These are usually made from high quality stainless steel. The needles are very fine. If you are someone that is uncomfortable with needles, we have the option to use Japanese acupuncture needles, which are even finer and cause very little, if any, discomfort.

Is it safe?

Yes, acupuncture is a very safe form of health care. There have been very few reports of injury from acupuncture and these are usually in cases of unqualified practitioners. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia ensures only fully qualified acupuncturists are registered in Australia. They outline strict practitioner guidelines and ensure members adhere to these.
